Animal care live-in volunteer
You may start any day as long as we have it available. Minimum stay two weeks. You will work four days each week.
Days are long, from dawn to dusk, but the happy smiling faces of the animals around you will make it all worth it. Duties include daily cleaning of barns and coops, feeding, health checks, light maintenance work, monitoring herd movements and intensive care of ill, old and baby animals. Extra duties may be required when new rescues, infants or school groups come in.
Permanent part-time opportunities are available here.
This is a responsible role. You will be provided with specific requirements and care standards and your work will be monitored regularly.
Only those with a deep desire to care for animals should apply.
Free accommodation
Free accommodation and a $10 per day food reimbursement is offered in our volunteer bungalow.
Accommodation is basic, but the kitchen is fitted out with everything you need and there is a comfortable living area. You will share a room with one other person. It's the responsibility of volunteers to clean and tidy the bungalow.
No experience is necessary as full training will be given.
The bungalow features a bathroom with a shower running hot and cold water, living room, kitchen and a small back yard. You will share a room with one other person and will share the bungalow with three people in total, who will also have a private room. A TV is provided along with a wood fire (you will need to chop wood if you want to stay warm!). Free wifi is provided and a swimming pool is also available.
Here is a video made by one of our wonderful volunteers about working on the farm. Please note that dawn in Queensland varies from 4.45am to 6.30am depending upon the time of year.
Location of the farm
The farm is 1km from the village of Dayboro, which has 6 cafes and a pub.
Conditions of the role
The farm is vegan. Animal products are not permitted to be brought into, or stored in, the volunteer accommodation. The Australian Government does not allow us to authorise second-year Working Holiday Visas.
If you fail to complete the one-month period, no meal allowance will be paid. You should not apply for this position if you are scared of large animals, don't want to clean up poop, don't have the confidence to manage the farm for a 10-hour period on your own, or if you are subject to feeling lonely or homesick. Working around farm animals is heavy, dirty and tiring work and requires strength and stamina. Working with large animals is not without danger but the sanctuary has policies in place so that you are insured against workplace accidents. Your safety is primarily your responsibility, you must follow our safety procedures or else you will place yourself at risk.
If short-listed you may be required to spend a day with one of our current volunteers, so that your abilities can be evaluated.
